Triple Success for Volkswagen

Volkswagen’s popular Golf was recently awarded the title of Best Small Family Car by the judges at What Car? Magazine.

The award was given to Volkswagen during a prestigious ceremony at the London Grosvenor House Hotel last January 18, 2007. The award presented by the What Car? Magazine is not the only honor received by Golf. It has also won the overall Car of the Year award shortly after its launch in 2004.

Volkswagen’s new Golf Match has received a lot of praises from the judges and here is what Steve Fowler Group Editor of What Car? has to say about the Golf, “ The Golf has always been a classy contender. This year, it found the final piece of a winning jigsaw.”

The Match replaced the SE model just last year to become the most popular Golf among buyers. It is equipped with desirable features and gadgets like an iPod link, color-coded bumpers, a leather multifunction steering wheel and a unique 15 inch alloy wheels. The Match is also equipped with the famous Volkswagen fuel filter which makes it environmentally friendly. Despite such remarkable equipment the price of the vehicle dropped by £380 compared to the outgoing SE model. And to think that the additional equipment could cost an extra £1,100 of added value to the vehicle’s price.

The Golf’s accolade was just one trio of awards secured by Volkswagen and also considered to be the highest achieved by any single manufacturer at the 2007 event.

The German automaker’s Passat won the Best Family Car award for the second year in a row. The Passat is a favorite of What Car? judges especially with its recent gained performance diesel in the form of the new 2.0 liter TDI 170 PS model that delivers a powerful 258 lbs ft of torque.

Steve Fowler in awarding the Passat commented, “The Passat is in a league of its own and keeps the flag flying high for the conventional saloon. For starters, its desirable image does more than just set the right tone in the company car park. It also helps keep residual values higher than many rivals -- which is good to know if you’re buying the car with your own money, rather than your company’s.”

To complete the triple success of Volkswagen, its four-seater Eos coupe cabriolet grabbed the hard fought Bet Open Top Car award on its debut in front of the What Car? judges. The Eos combines the virtues of both a hard top coupe and a convertible through the use of a sophisticated folding mechanism that comes complete with a sliding glass sunroof which is unique in its class and has captivated the judges of What Car? as well as the UK buyers.

Why give Volkswagen three awards? Here is what Steve Fowler has to say about their decision, “Volkswagen has watched what the other manufacturers have been up to in the coupe-cabrio sector, then it has gone out and built a car that is better than any of its competition. The Eos is a cracking car to buy, and it’ll be a hoot to own. What more can you ask for?”

Paul Willis, Director of Volkswagen UK was very pleased with the three awards that they have received, and here is what he said, “We are delighted and particularly proud that the Eos has won on its debut. For the Golf and Passat to have maintained their popularity with the judges to win their classes is also a tremendous achievement.”
